In the third generation of the entry-level luxury sedan, the offshore branch of Toyota introduced some real and significant changes to the lineup. Namely, they ditched the slow and obsolete 2.5-liter V6 in the rear-wheel drive IS 250 and replaced it with a sprightly 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The third generation IS also featured some extensive updates to the exterior and interior, decking out the cabin with some really cool performance gadgetry as well as safety features.
The new, or should we say refreshed, mid-cycle 2017 Lexus IS, will not be a quantum leap in terms of styling or engines as compared to its predecessor. It is simply meant to keep the model appealing until the next major re-do rolls around. Although the buzz concerning the refresh has been consistently growing in the last few weeks, there is as yet nothing substantive to go on except a few computer rendered images floated around the Net and a little bit of creative engineering.
Exterior and Interior
The new 2017 Lexus IS clearly keeps the trademark spindle grille intact. However, the grille is flanked by what appears to be the restyled headlamps in a new more pointed iteration with the more stretched LED daytime running lights. The steeply angled windshield comes with thinner A-pillars while the B-pillars have been rendered nearly invisible with a ‘black-out’. There rear doesn’t seem to feature any significant changes, or not any that we could notice, while retaining the same stubby outline. Unfortunately, the renderings do not include the inside look into the cabin, so even if Lexus is considering updates to the solid and functional cabin of the IS lineup we have not managed to come by any concrete evidence. Just by way of reminding, the last generation of the IS came with plenty of driving enhancements including a heated steering wheel, clear separation of the instrument cluster and controls, plus dual zone automatic climate control, and the ever handy Pre-Collision System.
The 2017 Lexus IS will include the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that performed so well in the last generation that it brought in an increase in power of up to 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, the maximum speed of 143 mph, as well as the 0 to 60 mph sprint finished in 6.9 seconds. The fuel ratings were improved as well to 22/33 mpg city/highway. The transmission in the new IS will also come as an eight-speed automatic.
