If we can rely on unofficial reports, it looks like the 2020 Toyota Fortuner will come to the U.S. market. This mid-size SUV may sound unfamiliar to some, but it is actually a very popular model in several parts of the world, including Australia, South East Asia, Russia etc. The reason for its popularity is simple. You definitely can’t go wrong with something that is heavily based on the world’s most capable pickup truck, Toyota Hilux. Considering the possible arrival in North America, we could see a couple of updates in the next year.
- Exceptional off-road performances
- Great predicted reliability
- Lots of powertrain options
- Not so refined interior
- Still waits for the confirmation
On the market that is overflowed with crossover, a classic body-on-frame SUV sounds like a real refreshment. There aren’t many vehicles of this type in North America and drivers from this part of the world would definitely appreciate a capable off-road vehicle that isn’t as huge and expensive as the Land Cruiser, for example. Of course, there is already a model caller 4Runner on the market, but it features a 10-year old design and most customers would definitely appreciate something more up-to-date. The 2020 Toyota Fortuner would, of course, come with a couple of modifications. The mechanical aspect of the SUV would probably remain untouched, but the styling would have to be adapted to the taste of North American drivers, which would in practice mean a new front end, with novelties in few more areas as well.
We are pretty sure that if the company is serious with the 2020 Toyota Fortuner’s arrival in North America, the interior design would have to suffer most. Not that the current cabin is bad. Moreover, it features amazing quality, but most of the parts are made of hard, dirt-friendly plastics. So, we should probably see modifications that would bring more refined, soft-touch materials, along with the longer list of standard equipment. Rest of the 2020 Toyota Fortuner’s cabin probably would feature bigger changes.
The Fortuner heavily relies on the Hilux, so it’s no wonder that it comes with same engines in the offer. This means a long list of diesel units, along with a couple of gasoline engines. Of course, the North American model would put the focus on the gasoline. So, base models will come with a familiar 2.7-liter unit. It is good for about 160 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. A large 4.0-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque should also come. Still, some reports suggest a more refined 3.5-liter V6 unit as a replacement. Some reports also mention a possibility to see a 2.8-liter diesel unit with 177 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque in the offer.
2020 Toyota Fortuner Release Date and Price
If 2020 Toyota Fortuner arrive in North America, expect a little bit earlier arrival than usual, but still in the second half of the year. Base models would probably cost around $30,000.
